Kapok and Materials
What is a kapok pillow?
A kapok pillow is filled with wild harvested kapok fiber, a silky plant fiber gathered by hand from the seed pods of kapok trees growing wild in Indonesian rainforests. Nothing is farmed, sprayed, or chemically treated. Kapok fibers are hollow and mostly air, so the fill lofts like down, sleeps cool, and is completely plant based. MAREA pairs this fill with a removable GOTS certified organic cotton sateen cover.
Is kapok organic?
You will notice we say wild harvested, not organic, and that is deliberate. Organic certification exists to verify how a crop is farmed. Kapok is not a crop. The trees grow on their own in Indonesian rainforests, nobody plants them, sprays them, or waters them, and the fiber is gathered by hand from pods the trees drop naturally. There is no farm to certify, so wild harvested is the accurate claim, and in our view the stronger one. The cover is a different story. Cotton is farmed, so every MAREA cover is cut from GOTS certified organic cotton sateen.
How does kapok compare to down and memory foam?
Kapok gives you the light, lofty feel people love about down, from a plant instead of a bird, with no feathers poking through and no animal sourcing. Against memory foam the differences are bigger. Kapok sleeps cool where foam traps heat, arrives without a chemical smell, and adjusts to your exact loft through the zipper instead of forcing one fixed shape on every neck.
Can you be allergic to kapok?
Kapok allergy is considered very rare. Most reactions people blame on a pillow trace back to other things entirely: dust mites, feathers and dander, or the chemical finishes used to process conventional fills. Kapok naturally resists dust mites, contains no animal material, and reaches you without chemical processing, so the usual suspects are simply not in the pillow. If you have a known sensitivity to a specific plant fiber, check with your doctor before changing your bedding.
What does a new MAREA pillow smell like?
Very little. Open the box and you may catch a faint, clean plant fiber scent that fades within a day. What you will not get is the sharp chemical smell that comes with foam pillows. That smell is off gassing, and there is nothing in a MAREA pillow to off gas. No foam, no adhesives, no synthetic finishes. Just kapok inside organic cotton.
I am sensitive to smells and chemicals. Is this pillow a good fit?
We built MAREA with sensitive sleepers in mind. Conventional pillows pick up chemistry at nearly every step: foam is poured from petrochemicals, fills are bleached or chemically softened, and fabrics are finished with wrinkle and stain treatments. Our kapok takes a different path. The fiber is gathered by hand from wild trees, cleaned, and packed. No bleaching, no softeners, no flame retardant sprays, no adhesives, at any point. The cover is GOTS certified organic cotton sateen, a standard that restricts chemical inputs from the cotton field to the finished fabric. Everyone is different, so we will not promise how your body will respond. That is what the 60 day sleep trial is for. Sleep on it in your own bedroom and let the pillow speak for itself.
Is kapok sustainable?
Kapok may be the lowest impact fill in bedding. The trees are never cut down or farmed. They grow wild, drop their seed pods on their own schedule, and the pods are gathered from the forest floor by hand. No irrigation, no pesticides, no machinery. Harvesting kapok also gives standing rainforest real economic value, which makes the trees worth more alive than cleared. And because every MAREA pillow can be topped up with refill kapok instead of thrown away, the pillow itself is built to stay out of landfills.
Is kapok good for hot sleepers?
Yes. Kapok fibers are hollow and roughly 80 percent air, so heat escapes instead of building up the way it does in memory foam.
Is the MAREA pillow vegan and hypoallergenic?
Yes. Kapok is a plant fiber, entirely vegan, and naturally resistant to dust mites without any chemical treatment. No animals, no foam, no chemical odors.
What is GOTS certified organic cotton sateen?
GOTS is the Global Organic Textile Standard, the leading third party certification for organic fabrics. It covers the fiber, the processing, and the chemicals allowed at every step. Sateen is a weave that gives the cotton a smooth, softly lustrous surface that feels cool against your skin. Every MAREA cover is cut from GOTS certified organic cotton sateen.
Why does a kapok pillow need a separate cover?
Kapok fill should never be machine washed, so the washable layer has to be the cover. Every MAREA cover is removable and machine washable with a full length hidden zipper.
The Pillows
Is the MAREA kapok pillow adjustable?
Yes. Every MAREA pillow ships generously filled and has a hidden zipper, so you can remove or add kapok to dial in your exact loft and firmness. Keep what you remove and top it back up any time.
What sizes does the MAREA kapok pillow come in?
Four sizes: Standard at 20 x 26 inches, Queen at 20 x 30 inches, King at 20 x 36 inches, and the Body Pillow at 20 x 54 inches.
Which pillow size should I choose?
Most sleepers on a queen bed choose the Queen, and a king bed looks best with two Kings. Side sleepers who hug a pillow or want hip and shoulder alignment should consider the Body Pillow.
What sleep positions work with a kapok pillow?
All of them, because you set the loft. Side sleepers keep the pillow fuller so it fills the space between shoulder and ear. Back sleepers remove a little fill for a medium loft that follows the curve of the neck. Stomach sleepers remove more for a low, soft profile. One pillow tunes to any of the three through the hidden zipper, and retunes whenever your sleep changes. Side sleepers chasing full body alignment can add the Body Pillow between the knees.
Does a kapok pillow need fluffing?
A quick one. Kapok is so light that it can drift toward one end of the pillow over a few nights. A ten second shake and a couple of pats bring the loft right back, the same ritual people have used with fine down pillows for generations. Think of it as part of making the bed, not maintenance.
Is a kapok pillow heavy?
No. Kapok is one of the lightest pillow fills there is, lighter than cotton, wool, or buckwheat, because each fiber is a hollow tube that is mostly air. In practice that means a MAREA pillow is easy to fluff with one hand, easy to reposition in the middle of the night, and light enough that even the Body Pillow moves around the bed without a fight.
How do I wash a kapok pillow?
Never machine wash kapok fill. The removable, machine washable GOTS certified organic cotton sateen cover takes the washing; the fill stays dry. If the inner pillow needs freshening, spot clean it and set it in the sun for an afternoon. A quick fluff every few days keeps the loft even.
Does a kapok pillow go flat?
Kapok settles, but it does not die. Each fiber is a hollow tube that is mostly air, and the weight of your head slowly presses some of that air out, so after months of nightly use the loft sits a little lower. Two things bring it back. Night to night, a quick shake redistributes the fill and lifts the height right back. Over the long run, the hidden zipper lets you add a scoop of Wild Harvested Kapok Refill and bring the pillow back to its original loft in minutes. Flat is permanent for a foam pillow. For a MAREA pillow it is a ten second fix.
How long does a kapok pillow last?
Kapok fill gradually compresses with nightly use. Top it up with the Wild Harvested Kapok Refill to restore the original loft instead of replacing the pillow. Cared for this way, a MAREA pillow lasts for years.
Where are MAREA pillows made?
Every MAREA pillow and cover is cut, sewn, and filled by hand in New Jersey, USA from wild harvested kapok fiber and GOTS certified organic cotton. The brand is designed in Hawaii.
Covers
How do I wash the MAREA cover?
Zip the cover off and machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry low, or line dry to extend the life of the fabric. Because the cotton carries no chemical finishes, there is nothing to break down in the wash.
What sizes do MAREA covers come in?
Standard at 20 x 26 inches, Queen at 20 x 30 inches, King at 20 x 36 inches, and the Body Pillow cover at 20 x 54 inches, each cut to the exact dimensions of its matching MAREA pillow.
Will MAREA covers fit pillows from other brands?
The Standard, Queen, and King covers follow common US pillow dimensions, so they fit most pillows from other brands in those sizes. The Body cover is cut to MAREA's own dimensions.
Does the cover change how the pillow feels?
The sateen weave adds a smooth, cool touch without changing the loft or support of the pillow inside.
Kapok Refill
How much refill do I need?
The 3 lb bag tops up one pillow that has settled over time. The 5 lb bag gives one pillow a complete refresh or tops up two. The 10 lb bag revives several pillows around the house, or fills cushions, poufs, and other projects.
How do I refill my pillow?
Open the hidden zipper on your pillow, add kapok a handful at a time, and stop when the loft feels right. Give the pillow a good fluff to distribute the new fiber evenly. The whole process takes a few minutes.
Can I use MAREA kapok in other pillows?
Yes. MAREA kapok is loose fill, so it works in any pillow or cushion with a zipper or an opening you can reach.
How is the refill packaged?
Loose kapok is weighed, packed to order, and sealed by hand at our workshop, which is why refill bags are a final sale. If a bag arrives damaged, or is not what you ordered, contact us and we will make it right.
How do I store loose kapok?
Keep loose kapok dry and stored in its sealed bag away from direct moisture. Never machine wash kapok fiber.
