Kapok vs Down Pillows: Materials, Feel and Care

A handful of silky wild harvested kapok fiber held in an open palm

Kapok is a plant fiber and down is an animal fill. Both make soft, moldable pillows. Here's how they compare on what's inside, how they feel, how you adjust them and how you care for them.

Materials and construction

MAREA's fill is 100% wild harvested kapok, with no down, feathers or foam blended in. It's wrapped in organic cotton sateen, a fully plant based pillow for anyone rethinking the materials in their bedroom. A down pillow may contain down, feathers or other components, so read the full label. If you're weighing animal welfare, the Responsible Down Standard is the certification to look for on down. Kapok skips that question entirely: it's gathered from the seed pods of standing ceiba trees. More on how kapok is harvested.

Feel

Down is soft and squishy and tends to flatten under your head through the night. Kapok is silky and light, with a slightly springier body, and it molds around your head and shoulder without the hug of foam. Each fiber is a hollow tube that's mostly air, which is a big part of why kapok sleeps light and airy.

Adjustable height

MAREA has a hidden zipper so you can reach the loose fill and set the height you want, then add or remove a handful whenever you like. A 3 lb refill bag is there if you want more. Many down pillows are sewn shut, so check before you buy.

Care

Down care varies by product, so follow its label. For MAREA, the routine is simple: keep the filled pillow dry, fluff it daily, and wash the removable zip on cover cold whenever you wash your sheets. Spot clean the shell as needed. See MAREA care instructions.

Allergies

Kapok is a plant fiber with no feathers in it, which is why people who avoid down often look at kapok. Allergies are individual, so read the kapok allergy guide for more.

Choosing between them

Choose kapok if you want a plant based loose fill, an adjustable height and a pillow that sleeps light. Compare size, total cost, included cover and return terms on any pillow you're considering. MAREA comes with a 100 day sleep trial on a used pillow, so you can try kapok for yourself.
