Sleep is the whole game
I'm Anthony. I surf, I freedive, I train jiu jitsu, and I've spent most of my life on boats or looking for the next place to take one. Before that it was every sport my parents would drive me to. The one thing connecting all of it, the thing nobody talks about, is sleep. You can't hold your breath at depth, roll six rounds, or paddle out at dawn if you slept like garbage. Recovery isn't a luxury for me. It's the whole game.
Hundreds of beds
For the last five years I've lived out of a bag more than out of a house. Airbnbs, homestays, boutique hotels, luxury hotels, and plenty of places that were none of those, across Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, Central America and South America. Hundreds of beds. When you sleep somewhere new every few nights, you start to notice what actually changes the night, and it isn't the view. It's the pillow under your head and the sheets against your skin. Get those two right and a simple room sleeps like a great one. Get them wrong and the nicest hotel in town can't save you.
A boutique hotel in Indonesia
One of those beds was in a small boutique hotel in Bali. The pillow on it was unlike anything I'd slept on. Soft, but it held its shape. Light. It just felt right, in a way I didn't have words for yet. I slept like a rock and woke up wondering what was inside it. In the morning I asked. Kapok, they said. And when I asked where they got them, they pointed me to a little home goods shop on the island.
So I went. At the shop they explained that kapok comes from the seed pods of a tree the islanders hold sacred, and that families there have been filling their pillows and mattresses with it for generations. I stood there thinking, how have I never heard of this? Something this simple, this old, this good, and nobody back home has ever seen it.
Then I came home
Back in the States I lay down on my own pillow and, for the first time, actually read the tag. Half polyester. The rest, conventional cotton. This was the thing I pressed my face into every night, and after Indonesia it felt crazy to keep doing it.
I'd already been replacing things in my home with materials I could name. Cookware first, then water filters, then sheets. The pillow was the last thing on the list and the hardest to find. Nobody was making the one I wanted: a plant fiber I could adjust myself, organic cotton around it, and nothing else in there.
The side sleeper secret
Here's the other half of the story. I'm a side sleeper, and somewhere along the way I figured out what worked for me: put a pillow between your knees and hug one against your chest, and everything changes. Hips stack. Shoulders relax. You wake up feeling like you actually slept.
Don't take my word for it. Tonight, grab any pillow in your house, put it between your knees, wrap your arms around another one, and lie on your side. That feeling is part of what this company is built on.
So I built the pillow I couldn't find
The idea was simple: bring a traditional plant fiber into a pillow you can make your own. Kapok has been used in bedding for generations. A nineteenth-century account preserved by the Smithsonian even describes kapok-filled pillows in the Indonesian region of Tidore. That history is part of what makes the fiber interesting today.
