Our Story
Sleep is the whole game
I'm Anthony. I surf, I freedive, I train jiu jitsu, and I've spent most of my life on boats or looking for the next place to take one. Before that it was every sport my parents would drive me to. The one thing connecting all of it, the thing nobody talks about, is sleep. You can't hold your breath at depth, roll six rounds, or paddle out at dawn if you slept like garbage. Recovery isn't a luxury for me. It's the whole game.
The swap that started everything
A few years ago I started replacing things in my home. Cookware first, then water filters, then sheets. The more I read about what everyday products are actually made of, the harder it got to ignore. When I got to my pillow, I stopped cold.
I was spending eight hours a night with my face pressed against a block of petroleum foam. The same research rabbit hole that made me toss my nonstick pans kept turning up the chemicals used in conventional pillows and mattresses, including flame retardants and compounds linked to hormone disruption. The thing I was using to recover was the last thing in my house I'd want to breathe next to all night.
The side sleeper secret
Here's the other half of the story. I'm a side sleeper, and somewhere along the way I figured out what every physical therapist already knows: put a pillow between your knees and hug one against your chest, and everything changes. Hips stack. Shoulders relax. You wake up feeling like you actually slept.
Don't take my word for it. Tonight, grab any pillow in your house, put it between your knees, wrap your arms around another one, and lie on your side. That feeling is what this company is built on.
So I built the pillow I couldn't find
I wanted one pillow that was completely clean and completely adjustable, and it didn't exist. Everything clean was a fixed slab. Everything adjustable was shredded foam. So we made our own.
Every MAREA pillow is filled with wild harvested kapok, a silky plant fiber gathered by hand from rainforest seed pods in Indonesia. No farms, no pesticides, no foam, no animal down. The cover is GOTS certified organic cotton sateen. Each pillow is cut, sewn, and filled by hand in New Jersey, and a hidden zipper lets you add or remove fill until the loft fits your body exactly. When it settles over the years, you top it up with refill kapok instead of throwing it away.
The way sleep was meant to feel
That's the standard: materials I trust enough to press my face against every night, in a pillow that adjusts to you instead of asking you to adjust to it. Sleep on it for 60 nights. If it isn't the best pillow you've ever owned, send it back for a full refund.
See you out there.
