Why side sleeping is the hard case
On your back, a pillow only has to hold up your head. On your side, it has to fill the whole space between the mattress and your ear, and that space is about as wide as your shoulder. Wider shoulders, bigger gap. That's why a pillow your partner loves can feel flat to you, and why so many side sleepers end up folding a pillow in half or stacking two.
I sleep on my side, and that was the problem I built MAREA around. I wrote the long version in The Best Pillow for Side Sleepers. This page is the short, practical one.
Why kapok works for it
Kapok is a silky plant fiber from the seed pods of the ceiba tree. Each fiber is hollow, which makes the fill light and springy (more in What Is Kapok?). Two things about it matter for side sleepers:
- It's loose fill. You can push it where you want it. Most side sleepers like a little more under the neck, and loose fill lets you shape that by hand. A block of foam is the height it is.
- You control how much there is. Our pillow ships full, the tallest it will ever be. If that's too high, you take some out. If you want more, you add refill. Either way you're adjusting to your shoulders, not to an average.
How to set it up
- Fluff it hard. Kapok compresses in the box. Give it a minute of squeezing and shaking when it arrives.
- Sleep one night on it full. Don't adjust anything yet.
- Check your head. Lying on your side, your head should sit level, not tipped up toward the ceiling or down toward the mattress. If it tips up, take out a handful. If it tips down, it's too low: keep it full or add refill.
- Go slowly. One handful at a time, one night at a time. It's easier to take more out than to wish you hadn't.
- Keep what you remove. Bag it and store it. Kapok settles over months, and that bag is how you top it off.
A tip for keeping it tidy: work over the bed, pull the fill out in whole clumps instead of pinches, and hold the fabric away from the zipper as you close it. My loft guide covers the details for every sleeping position.
Which size to choose
Size changes how wide the pillow is, not how tall it sits. Height comes from the fill, so choose size by the bed and how much you move.
| Size | Dimensions | Price | Good fit if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 20 × 26 in | $129 | You sleep in one spot and use a standard pillowcase |
| Queen | 20 × 30 in | $149 | You want room to slide a hand or arm under the pillow |
| King | 20 × 36 in | $169 | You move around a lot, or you're dressing a king bed |
| Body | 20 × 54 in | $209 | You want something to hold and something between your knees |
The pillow between your knees
A lot of side sleepers end up hugging a spare pillow or wedging one between their knees. If that's you, our kapok body pillow runs 54 inches, long enough to go from about your collarbone to past your knee, with the same adjustable kapok fill. There's a full guide to kapok body pillows for side sleepers too.
Try it in your own bed
A pillow you can set to your own height beats one built around somebody else's shoulders. The real test is your bed, so every MAREA pillow comes with a 100 day sleep trial, used pillows included, with a free US return label.
