Every kapok pillow settles. The fibers are hollow and springy, but months of your head pressing on them compresses the loft, and one morning the pillow that used to sit just right feels a little low. This is expected, it is reversible, and fixing it is the whole point of a zippered pillow.
First, fluff. Then decide.
Settling and loss are different things. Most of the time the fill has simply migrated: more in the middle, less at the edges, a little compacted. Pick the pillow up by two corners, shake it hard a few times, then knead it like dough for thirty seconds. Do that daily, the way you would with down. If the loft comes back, you do not need refill yet. If the pillow still sits lower than it did when it was new, or you have removed fill over time and lost track of it, it is time to add fiber.
How much kapok to add
A MAREA refill is a 3 lb bag of loose wild harvested kapok, so you'll have plenty left over to top it off again later. Add a small handful at a time; the amount you need depends on pillow size, existing fill and preferred loft. Stop when the pillow feels right, and save unused fiber in a dry, sealed bag.
The routine
- Work over the bed, with the windows closed. Kapok is fine and floaty. A fan or an open window turns a refill into a snowstorm. Spread a sheet or work directly on the mattress so any stray fiber is easy to gather.
- Open the hidden zipper all the way. Push the existing fill away from the opening so you have room to work.
- Add a handful at a time. Reach in and push each handful toward the far corners first, then fill toward the middle. Filling the corners deliberately is what keeps the pillow from developing a dome with thin edges.
- Stop before it feels full. Kapok relaxes and expands after you close the zipper. Aim for slightly less than you think you want.
- Zip up and shake. Two corners, shake, knead. Lie on it for a minute in your usual position.
- Adjust after a night. Sleep on it, then add or remove a handful. Side sleepers usually want it fuller; back and stomach sleepers usually stop earlier. The loft guide explains why.
- Seal the leftover. Fold the top of the refill bag over and keep it somewhere dry. It will be there the next time the pillow settles.
A few things not to do
- Do not wash the fill. Kapok stays at its best dry. The outer cover zips off for washing according to its care label. The care guide.
- Do not put loose kapok in the dryer to fluff it. It is a fine plant fiber, and heat does it no favors. Like any natural fiber, loose kapok should be kept away from heaters and flames; here's more on kapok and fire safety.
- Do not mix in polyester or foam to bulk it up. You will lose the breathability and the feel that made you choose kapok.
- Do not overfill. A rock hard pillow is the most common refill mistake, and the fix is just taking some out again.
Refilling a body pillow
Same routine, more patience. Open the zipper and work the new fiber down the length in stages, pushing each handful past the last so the loft is even from end to end. Check it by laying the pillow flat and looking along it from one end; any dip is where the next handful goes. How to sleep with a body pillow covers the setup once it is full.
Questions I get asked
How often does a kapok pillow need refilling? It varies with the sleeper. Daily fluffing keeps most pillows feeling right for many months; topping it off once or twice a year is typical. How long pillows last, by fill.
Can I use MAREA refill in another brand's kapok pillow? Yes, if it has a zipper. It is loose kapok fiber; it does not know whose pillow it is in.
Can I return the refill? Refill is bagged to order for you and is final sale. If a bag arrives damaged or wrong, contact us and we will make it right.
Do I need refill right away? No. Every MAREA pillow ships generously filled, and any fiber you remove to lower the loft can be saved for later. The 3 lb bag is there for when you want more.
