Kapok Body Pillows Compared: Size, Fill and Price

When I went looking for a body pillow filled with nothing but kapok, I expected a long list. I found a handful. Here are the three I could check, side by side: size, fill, price and how you adjust them. Full disclosure, one of them is ours.

Why kapok works in a body pillow

You hold a body pillow all night. It sits against your chest, under your arm and between your knees, so how it feels matters more than almost anything else on the bed. Kapok is a soft, light fiber from the seed pods of the ceiba tree. It feels a lot like down, with no feathers involved. And because it's loose fill, not a block of foam, you can unzip the pillow and take some out until it fits you. That matters more in a body pillow than a head pillow, because the right thickness between your knees depends on how wide your hips and shoulders are. What actually separates them

• Shape. MAREA and Savvy Rest are flat rectangles. The Sleeping Bean is a round bolster. A flat pillow is easier to hug and fold between your knees, which is what most side sleepers are after.
• Length. At 54 inches, a pillow runs from about your collarbone to past your knee if you're around average height. That's the length that does the two jobs that matter, chest and knees, without taking over the bed when you share it.
• Fill. Some brands sell the same body pillow with several fills, so double check you're ordering kapok. MAREA is kapok only, always.
• Certification you can check. Ask any brand which part a certification covers and for the license number, then look it up yourself.

Questions people ask

Is a kapok body pillow heavy?

Not really. Kapok is one of the lightest natural fibers there is, so even a full length body pillow is easy to move around in bed.

Can you wash a kapok body pillow?

Keep the filled pillow dry, spot clean it when you need to, and use a removable cover you can throw in the wash. Our care page has the details.

Does a kapok body pillow go flat?

It settles over months, like any loose fill. Give it a shake, work the fill back along the length, and top it off with refill kapok when you want more loft.
