Search for a kapok pillow and you'll get thirty results at prices from $25 to over $200, and at least half of them aren't really kapok pillows. Here's the checklist I'd use to sort them.
1. Is it 100% kapok, or a blend?
This is the one that changes everything else. The best known "kapok" pillows on the market are shredded memory foam or latex with kapok mixed in, and they behave like foam pillows with a softer surface. A pure kapok pillow behaves like a plant fiber version of down: it compresses, it recovers, it drapes around your head instead of pushing back. Look for the actual fill percentage. If the listing says "kapok blend," "kapok and memory foam," or "with kapok," it's a foam pillow. I compared the two in detail in Pure Kapok vs Kapok Blend Pillows. Ours is 100% kapok, no foam, no latex.
2. What is the shell made of, and is it certified?
Check the shell fabric and ask what any certification covers. MAREA uses 300 thread count organic cotton sateen for both the shell and the zip off cover, GOTS certified by Oregon Tilth under license GOTS-10229. Read our certification guide.
3. Can you open it?
A kapok pillow you can't open is a fixed loft pillow that happens to be natural. The point of loose fiber is that you can take some out or put more in, and that needs a zipper on the shell. Check for one, check that it's hidden or covered so it doesn't scratch, and check that it runs along a short end so you can actually get your hand in. No zipper means you're stuck with whatever loft the factory guessed. Every MAREA pillow has a hidden zipper, and the loft guide walks through how to use it.
4. Can you get more fill later?
Check whether replacement fill is available. MAREA sells a 3 lb bag of wild harvested kapok, so a pillow that's been slept on for a few years can be topped off instead of thrown out.
5. Where is it made?
Most of the kapok pillows on the big marketplaces are imported finished, and the listing usually won't tell you where they were sewn or under what standards. A pillow made in a small workshop shows it in the seams. Ours are handcrafted in the USA and designed in Hawaii. It's a fair thing to ask any brand to state plainly.
6. What's the trial, really?
Read the return terms for the exact pillow rather than relying on a mattress trial banner. Check whether a used pillow is accepted, when the window begins and who pays return shipping. MAREA offers a 100 day sleep trial from delivery on a used pillow, with a prepaid US return label. How the kapok brands compare on trials and returns.
7. Is there a body pillow?
A body pillow is worth considering if you like something to hug or place between your knees. MAREA's 20 × 54 inch body pillow has the same adjustable kapok fill. See how to arrange it.
